The Most Magnificent Thing Social-Emotional Learning Focused Close Reading Activities
by admin

The picture book The Most Magnificent Thing is a great example of how we can use literature to help instill Social Emotional Learning skills into our students’ hearts and minds. This book helps teachers educate students on topics such as perseverance, goal setting, asking for help, being creative, and goal setting. Engineering anything can be difficult and takes time and creativity. In this book, readers will experience the struggle of a girl who is trying to build her most magnificent thing. She comes across several barriers as she is working, and she ends up getting frustrated and flipping her lid. She eventually comes back, takes pieces and parts of each invention that she’s already made, and succeeds in making her most magnificent thing. This resource includes a two-page lesson plan and ten student-driven activities that focus on SEL topics. This resource is entirely compatible with Google™ Slides and also has a printable version! Inside of the lesson plan, you will find: A “Before Reading” activity and discussion questions. A “During The Reading” discussion questions. An “After the Reading” activity and/or discussion questions. The student-driven activities focus around: Close-reading comprehension questions that all focus on the SEL skills you want your students to learn and practice. Questions that challenge students’ thinking on a topic. Questions that reinforce what they might do or say if they were in the story. Working definitions of SEL skills (such as compassion). One of the largest needs in our schools and in our classrooms is access to appropriate and meaningful SEL (Social-Emotional) curriculum. Students need to be able to work through the five competencies of SEL: Self-Awareness, Self-Management, Social Awareness, Relationship Skills, and Responsible Decision Making (© CASEL 2017). This product is a part of The SEL Bookshelf™ Curriculum Series.
